A fatal train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the pace and handling of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a line developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify what caused this accident,” declared the head of state.
The president confirmed that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The president stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the immediate past president, whose presidency concluded the prior year. This project was closely associated with his leadership's strategic goals for the southern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The building of both rail lines was overseen by the armed forces, marking a notable expansion of its role in public infrastructure. They were built at an rapid speed, beating expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously sparked ongoing questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an previous accident this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen several non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a major opposition party demanded an immediate suspension in the development and management of all similar projects.
This halt was proposed pending a comprehensive technical review. The party stated that the tragedy "requires prompt explanations."
In response, the head of state insisted that the train had been functioning in full adherence to all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the development and running of these national undertakings.
