Around 50 vehicles have been smeared with what appears to be blood from a person in the Germany's town of Hanau close to Frankfurt, according to law enforcement.
Cars, exterior walls and postboxes were marked, sometimes with swastikas, they announced in a statement.
Officers say they were alerted in the late hours on Wednesday evening, when a man observed that a vehicle in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been marked with a reddish-hued substance.
The substance had been applied in the pattern of a banned symbol, they added.
Law enforcement then located many other vandalized automobiles and building exteriors in the nearby vicinity.
These symbols are illegal in Germany under regulations outlawing the public exhibition of Nazi-era symbols.
Officials state early analysis indicate the liquid was likely human bodily fluid.
"At present there remains no clue as to its origin; authorities are currently not informed of any injuries in connection with the incident," they added.
Local authorities announced they were working "to unravel the incident" and have appealed to the community for information.
An important political figure said the attack made him speechless and had to be solved promptly.
"This event hits the center of Hanau and reawakens the pain of the right-wing violent incident half a decade ago," he posted on online, mentioning the murder of nine people by a shooter targeting people of migrant background in February 2020.
