EU Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US on five Europeans working on combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted figures that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.
