Wimbledon Adopts Video Review System for the First Time.

The Championships tennis court with video review system

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in implementing replay technology.

Video review technology will be launched at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Players will gain the ability to contest certain rulings from the official, mirroring the system currently in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This technology will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This development comes just a season following the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which brought an end to the centuries-old role of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Players will not be permitted to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to review other decisions, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot touched an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Potential interference end of a point.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a competitor can ask for.

Practical Application

A recent case took place in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a tough call for the official, but thought his rival had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and ruled Draper was guilty of interference, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews in place at all of its events.

Further Updates

A further change at The Championships this year will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was in or out.

In other news, with precisely 100 days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
